Well, I took on my biggest project yet which had a few bumps along the way but it all worked out and everyone was loved the result. The project was a wedding reception last weekend. The couple had gotten married on Valentine's Day but were having an informal June reception. The schedule posed a unique problem. The reception was an open house that lasted all day with both lunch and dinner being served. Since people would come and go before the cake was scheduled to be cut at 7:00pm. The solution we came up with was to serve petit fours during the day with lunch and save the cake for the cutting in the evening. So there were 35 petit fours and a two layer cake. Both were lemon cake with raspberry preserves, lemon Italian meringue buttercream, and fresh raspberries. The cake is covered in fondant and decorated with gumpaste and real flowers. The petit fours were covered in poured fondant and decorated with the same gumpaste flowers. The bride is a big time pirate fan and likes chocolate cake therefore there was also a bride's cake (instead of a groom's) which was pirate themed and chocolate with a brown sugar Italian meringue buttercream.

Little League Cake
Hello! My newest creation is a cake for a Little League end of the season party. It was fun to make. Each tier is one layer of vanilla and one layer of chocolate with a vanilla buttercream frosting. All decorations are fondant or gumpaste. The best part was that the baseballs around the bottom tier had each player's name and number and made a perfect slice for each one. The kids were thrilled! One of the kids was so impressed that everything was edible that he took a huge bite right out of the fondant bat, he said he liked it!

Mother's Day
I spent a wonderful Mother's Day in the park in Marin, and the weather was fantastic. I made three cakes, one for my Aunt's birthday, and two for Mother's Day. The purple flower cake was inspired by the textile designs of Marimekko. It was a lemon cake with blueberry buttercream frosting. The poppy on top was made out of gum paste. The yellow cake with the white flower appliques is a white cake with a lemon, Framboise buttercream and fresh raspberries. And the flower cake is a chocolate cake with Oreo cookie frosting. The cake is iced in fondant with real flowers. I used mostly organic ingredients and substituted agave nectar for as much sugar as possible. Agave nectar has a much lower glycemic index than sugar and therefore much better for diabetics and others wanting to watch their sugar intake. To see more of these cakes please visit my website at http://sites.google.com/site/cakesbymahala/ . And stay tuned, I have a wedding, baseball team party, Father's Day, and another birthday coming up!
